Home Farm, Pepper Arden
Nineteenth century farm buildings at Home Farm, a large estate farm on the Pepper Arden estate. The tall brick chimney is interesting, but its purpose is unknown.

Stable Yard, Pepper Arden Estate
Looking somewhat worse for wear. There were details on the Internet of a major redevelopment of this area into luxury apartments etc, with an artists impression of the end result. No progress so far.

Site of old pond at South Cowton
The obvious outline of a former pond in a hollow below Cowton Castle. This may well have been a fishpond associated with the medieval village of South Cowton which occupied the surrounding land.

Cowton Castle
A close up of this impressive fortified house from the north east. There are two short towers at the NE/NW corners and heraldic carvings over the doorway. Some of the windows on this side appear to be later alterations.

Cowton Castle
A 15th century castle in good condition. In private hands, occupied as a farmhouse and bed and breakfast. For details, see http://www.gatehouse-gazetteer.info/English%20sites/2057.html . Two fine steeds by the castle
The picture would look complete with a medieval knight astride one of these fine horses, but alas it could not be. Horses by Cowton Castle.

Cowton Castle
The castle stands on a low hill amidst quiet pastoral countryside. It was built for Sir Richard Conyers in 1487, which is very late for a true castle [which it is not]. The building is more of a country house with defensive capabilities - rather like that of Nappa Hall in Wensleydale Image which is of similar age. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Cowton_Castle
