Changes at the old prison site
A mixture of old and new here, with a new office block to the left and part of the former prison, which is grade 2 listed, to the right. I believe the prison block is undergoing conversion into apartments. Elsewhere on the site are two supermarkets and further retail/office developments.

Statue of Sophie Constable
A recently erected sculpture by Ray Lonsdale situated at the edge of the former Northallerton Prison site, now the Treadmills development. Sophie Constable was an 11 year old girl, convicted of stealing a loaf of bread in Whitby and imprisoned here in Northallerton for 3 weeks in 1873. A plaque on the base of the sculpture has the following inscription..... 'The ballad of Sophie Constable A life without choice, a future restricted, but all the same found guilty - convicted. Guilty of stealing by devious deception and the law to be followed, without exception. Sophia and her mild transgression Sophia Constable aged just eleven'.

Zetland Street
Zetland Road links the High Street with East Road which runs along and serviced the back of the narrow burgage plots that form the town properties. At the end of the street there is the large wall of the prison.
