Gainford Hall, south elevation
There's not much more than a glimpse of this fine building as one passes by on the A67, but from this angle there's a good view of the south elevation. This is a quite remarkable house, dating from 1600-1603 and probably the first in the north of England to be built on a double pile plan. It was built for John Cradock, vicar of Gainford, and one wonders how the vicar of a country parish could afford such a residence. After nearly 250 years it was described as being in a dilapidated state, and was restored in the late 19thC, which is why some of the exterior details such as the chimney pots don't look quite right. It would be interesting to know if the interior was restored in a sympathetic manner. The house is grade 1 listed.
