Mine Water Monitoring Station
Monitoring station close to the former East Howle Colliery. In its heyday East Howle had three shafts, several coke ovens and a brickworks. The colliery was involved in a gruesome accident in 1903 when a fall of stone severed a steam pipe at shaft bottom, adjacent to where the pit ponies were stabled, 66 ponies perished in the escape of steam. The colliery closed only 18 months after the accident, the pit village terraced housing was demolished in 1967 leaving little trace today of an industrial village that employed over 1000 people.
