Binns (House of Fraser), High Row, Darlington
Binns, with its art deco shop front, has been a dominating presence in Darlington town centre since 1922. It became a House of Fraser department store in 1953 but continued to trade under the name 'Binns' in Darlington. On 7th June 2018, it was announced that this store would be one of 31 (out of 59) House of Fraser shops to close. The Market Cross in the foreground was gifted to Darlington by Dame Dorothy Brown in 1727. It has been sited in its present location since 1993.

Blackwellgate in the rain
This used to be a bus lane until central Darlington was pedestrianised quite recently (the work took an extraordinary amount of time, during which pedestrians were disrupted even more than traffic). Blackwellgate leads between Binns and Boyes towards High Row, where water cascading down steps (a deliberately built feature) has the inevitable effect of causing shoppers to rush away in search of public toilets. Can't be good for business.
