Bowes Museum [10]
In the gardens of the museum, this 8-ring armillary sphere was erected in 2005 by the Friends of Bowes Museum in memory of the Queen Mother, who was their patron. Bowes Museum in Newgate, Barnard Castle, is an art gallery built to house the art collection of John Bowes and his wife Joséphine Coffin-Chevallier. It opened in 1892 and contains paintings by El Greco, Goya, Canaletto and others, items of decorative art, ceramics, textiles, tapestries, clocks and costumes, and objects of local historical interest. Constructed, in a château style, of ashlar under a slate roof. The interior is lavishly decorated. The Armillary Sphere Memorial
Erected in the west end of Bowes' Museum garden. The stainless steel plaque on the plinth announces: 'Dedicated to the Memory of HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother By HRH The Duke of Gloucester KG GC VC On 8th October 2005'.

Armillary Sphere Memorial, Bowes Museum
Sundial erected in 2005 by the Friends of Bowes Museum in memory of the Queen Mother who was their patron. It was made by David Harber. It is inscribed "hora transit manet amicitia", which translates as "the hour passeth, friendship endureth". Also see Image

War memorial
In the gardens of the museum, this war memorial was unveiled in July 1921 for the Durham Militia. Constructed of ashlar, with an octagonal plan. A slender tapered shaft is topped with a stone crucifix, the cross with decorated arms.
