Market Cross, Barnard Castle
Looking north up Market Place (A67) from inside the Market Cross building that forms a roundabout at the junctions of Market Place, The Bank and Newgate. In its time this circular structure has been a town hall, courtroom, lock-up and fire station. Another name for it is the Butter Market from when farmers' wives sold their wares from inside at street level.

No Longer a Convenience to the Public
Underground toilets in Market Place, Barnard Castle. Closed from 1st April 2007. If you are not a fool you now use those at the nearby Morrison's supermarket.
The entrance is one of a pair. There is no longer any indication of which gender would have used this one.
