Witham Hall, Market Place
Grade II Listed Witham Hall was named after Henry T M Witham of Lartington Hall. Witham died in 1844 and in 1854 the Witham Hall was built by public subscription to designs by John and Benjamin Green as a testimonial to Henry to house Barnard Castle Mechanics Institute and the Dispensary Society. A Music Hall to the rear was added at a cost of £807 in 1860, architect unknown with a later a linking corridor. In the 1970s the Music Hall was leased as a showroom and subsequently it and other parts of the Testimonial Hall were leased to Barnard Castle Town Council. In the early 1980s the hall was repaired with help from the local authority and use was managed first by the YMCA and then by a Witham Hall Community Association. In the late 1990s all parties merged into one organisation, called The Witham, while ownership of the Hall building passed to the Charity Commission.
