Tees Railway Path passing beneath road bridge
The Tees Railway Path passing Mickleton as the partly hidden signpost shows. There's been a surprising increase in the near vegetation cover since Clive Nicholson's image was taken just over three years earlier from a near-identical position - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6175858 .

Tees Rail Walk at Mickleton
Running for some 10 km between Middleton-in-Teesdale and Cotherstone, an attractive route for cyclists, walkers and horse-riders. The railway from Barnard Castle to Middleton-in-Teesdale operated from 1868 to 1964.

Autumn birch by the Teesdale Railway walk
Like many old railways, the now abandoned Teesdale line has become surrounded by trees which would not have survived in the days when it was operational. These add to the character of what is now a walking route with very gentle gradients on the south side of the valley. Although recent high winds have stripped the leaves from many species, including the berry-laden hawthorns, the birches are made of sterner stuff and are still displaying their autumn colours in the brief snatches of sunshine between the showers.
