Origins of the first viable public railway, in North Road, Darlington
It was here that George Stephenson met Edward Pease in 1821 and persuaded him to use steam locomotives for his proposed Stockton & Darlington Railway, rather than horses as was planned. A plaque over the 'Best Kebab' shop commemorates the event but it is more likely that the meeting took place in the adjoining building, currently the 'Cuisine Marmaris'. Stephenson and Pease remained firm friends until Stephenson died in 1848. Pease died in 1858. See also Image
