The Horse and Groom at Castleside
Nice to see this old inn is still surviving. It dates back to the 18th century and stood beside the old pack horse road which ran across the modern road here and down to Allensford on the Derwent. Replaced by what became the present A68 in the late 18th century.

The Horse and Groom, Castleside
There has been a pub on this spot for a long time. In the early 18th century it was called the Lane Ends Inn, and stood on the main drove road south from Scotland. This was before the village of Castleside came into existence. I don't know how much of the present building dates back to then.
