The A690 Sunderland to Durham road drops down the Magnesian limestone escarpment in a massive cutting, effectively dividing the town of Houghton-le-Spring into two.

Former Drill Hall on Henry Street (2)
The two storey building at right angles to the hall would have administration offices and stores. An archway provided access to the drill hall. The smaller cottage behind was accommodation for the full time instructor usually an ex-regular drill sergeant.
