A690 at Houghton-le-Spring
The A690 Durham to Sunderland road climbs 40m in 2Km up the Magnesian limestone escarpment, effectively cutting the town of Houghton-le-Spring in two. From Rainton Bridge where the road crosses the valley on a viaduct, it successively passes through a cutting (seen here), over another viaduct and finally in a cutting up to the top of the hill.

The Broadway, Houghton-le-Spring
Houghton-le-Spring is a thriving town between Durham and Sunderland, whose prosperity originally depended on the now-defunct coal industry. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houghton-le-Spring http://www.wearsideonline.com/houghton_le_spring.html Like it says on the label, the Broadway is indeed a "broad way"!
