This parish church is right in the town centre, in a prominent position beside the main bus stops on Broadway. It dates right back to Norman times, being built in the 12th century. There have been many alterations of course, the most important being by the famous North East architect John Dobson in the mid 19th century.

Entrance to the churchyard
The church of St Michael and All Angels in the town centre at Houghton-Le-Spring. Originally this archway was the gatehouse of the rectory and stood on the opposite side of the road. In the 1940's, the rectory was demolished but the gatehouse archway was re-erected in this new position. The 4 shields represent 3 famous former vicars and the See of Durham.
