King Coal
Standing about 15 metres high, the most impressive of all the sculptures which have been sited along the Consett and Sunderland Railway Path.

King Coal on the Consett and Sunderland Railway Path
The Consett and Sunderland Railway Path forms part of National Cycle Network route 7 and the famous C2C Cycle Route. A number of artworks commemorating the industrial heritage of the area, have been constructed along the path, of which this is one of the most spectacular.
King Coal, constructed by David Kemp, is a massive crowned head of a bearded man, made of recycled bricks, stone, mining shovels and a fan impeller. Its completion on 15th October 1992 coincided with the announcement that the last pits in the Durham coalfield were to be closed.

Cyclist passing riders
Although it has been upgraded in recent years, the tarmac strip towards the eastern end of the Consett and Sunderland Cycle Path is only just wide enough to allow cyclists to safely pass horse-riders.
