Durham Castle from the Cathedral
Durham Castle is a Norman castle which has been wholly occupied since 1840 by University College, Durham. The castle stands on top of a hill above the River Wear on Durham's peninsula, opposite Durham Cathedral.

Elvet Bridge, Durham, from Sadler Street
The Cathedral, Castle and Market Square of Durham are on a high promontory within a loop of the River Wear. Elvet Bridge is the ancient bridge into the city centre from the East. This photo, taken on a rainy morning, looks East from the centre. Traffic has been diverted over a new bridge nearby.

Saddler Street, Durham
This is the 2006 Durham Miners Gala, many bands are marching through the city this morning and there are many NUM branches, and other trade unions, represented. The superb Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band are immediately in front of us. They represent Blackhall Colliery. Here is their website.
