Shop with a teapot on the wall
'East' clothes shop, 73-75 Saddler Street. The building dates from the 17th century, originally a house, with a mill built at the rear in the 18th century. For more information and photos, see Keys to the Past http://www.keystothepast.info/Pages/pgDetail.aspx?PRN=D34601 . The metal teapot is thought to have been made around 1832. This is not its original location - it was put here in 1970. Previously the teapot had been mounted in several different locations around the city centre, and moved as shops closed or were demolished (information from Durham Advertiser http://www.durhamadvertiser.co.uk/news/3829130.display/ ).

View along Saddler Street in Durham
This is the street which leads from the market place up to the cathedral. The eighteenth century Shakespeare pub is in the middle of the picture. It was originally the Lord Nelson, but was renamed in the nineteenth century after a theatre opened in the lane behind it.
