Dun Cow Lane, Durham
Seen from North Bailey, the short street leads up to Palace Green and the Cathedral. Its name originates from a legendary dun cow that led the community of St Cuthbert to Durham in 995 http://www.durhamworldheritagesite.com/history/st-cuthbert/body/durham .

The lane leads from Palace Green to North Bailey (ahead). I liked the contrast between Victorian (left) and older brick.

North Bailey, Durham
Despite its width or lack of it, North Bailey (and its continuation behind the camera, South Bailey) is the main north / south thoroughfare on the central part of Durham containing the Castle and Cathedral. This is almost an island, and everything is quite compact. Here the photographer is standing just east of the cathedral, looking north. On the left is the even narrower Dun Cow Lane.

Statue of St Cuthbert
Outside the back of the Church of St. Mary-le-Bow, in the sculpture garden, there are two large works by renowned local sculptor, Fenwick Lawson. The first one is a statue of St Cuthbert. This statue was given to the Durham Heritage Centre and Museum, current occupiers of the church, in 2004. http://www.durhamheritagecentre.org.uk/index.html
