Logan House
The Logan Botanic Garden is part of the original estate of Logan House, which is immediately adjacent to the walled garden which has been donated to the nation under the stewardship of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. The house was built in 1702 for Colonel Andrew McDouall, extended 1848-51 and remodelled in 1874-8 first by Scottish baronial architect David Bryce (1803-76) but returned considerably to its original appearance in 1952 for banker Olaf Hambro (1885 - 1961), who bought the house in 1949. He wished to donate the house and estate to the nation, but it was realised that the overheads would be too great and only the walled garden was transferred. The house is not open to the public, but the woodland garden is open to visitors for a fee paid at a pay-and-display machine on the drive.

Logan House woodland
Mature beech trees fringe the drive to the house. The maturity of the planting tells at once that this is a historic and well-tended landscape.

Monkey Puzzle Walk
An avenue of Monkey Puzzle trees on one side and Cordyline on the other is most unusual. Individual Auracaria trees are over a hundred years old, and losses have been replanted in recent years. An understory of Fuchsia is endemic in this climatically favoured location.

Northern end of the Walled Garden
This wall, over 4 metres high, bounds the Walled Garden in the Logan Botanic Garden. On the far side of the wall is the totally separate Logan House Garden.

Border in the walled garden at the Logan Botanic garden
The orange/red montbretia (crocosmia) standing out. This plant spreads everywhere in this area although it adds welcome splashes of colour. I remember my dad calling it "that damn weed!" when I was a child.

I did not write down its name, but it grows at a high altitude in Chile.
