War Memorial, Balmaclellan
Balmaclellan (Scottish Gaelic: Baile MhicIllFhaolain, meaning town of the MacLellans) is a small hillside village of stone houses with slate roofs in a fold of the Galloway hills. The war memorial is situated in a small layby at the side of the A712, above the eastern end village. The memorial is in the form of a stone obelisk on plinth with stepped base on adjoining hard standing.
The inscription on the front face reads:
TO THE MEMORY OF
BRAVE MEN OF BALMACLELLAN
WHO FELL DURING THE
GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918
"THEY FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT"
Two of the faces list the names of those who died during the First World War (http://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/names/listing/5865 for list).
The other face lists those who died during the Second World War with the inscription:

Balmaclellan War Memorial

The war memorial is situated in a small layby at the side of the A712, above the eastern end village. The memorial is in the form of a stone obelisk on plinth with stepped base on adjoining hard standing.
