Sanquhar: a curious monument
This interesting item appears to consist of some scientific object, or a fossil, perhaps, encased in glass and mounted on a stone pillar. There are inscriptions on each of the four panes - from the one facing slightly left and moving anticlockwise: Built and shaped by the layers of mineral treasure taken from the ground, this area has played its part in the achievements of science and technology, which now allows us to use the light of the day to illuminate the night. From bedrock to sunlight, from earth to brick, sand to glass, from fossil coal to purest metal, earth, air, fire and water were used by people of every age to advance the development of their civilisation. The hills surrounding this spot have given us stone, coal, lead, silver and gold, and the river valley contains clay for brick and for bowls. Unfortunately, I cannot make out the wording of the fourth side and nor can I find any translations online. See Image for detail from the southwest.
