Drumlanrig Castle
Drumlanrig Castle, built in the late 17th century is the seat of the Dukes of Buccleuch. A very popular visitor attraction, in addition to the castle itself, it offers walks, craft shops and food stalls. Kirkpatrick Macmillan (1812-1878) is one of the world's great unsung heroes. In the 1830s whilst working in the forge at the Castle, he conceived the idea for a treadle-operated velocipede; an idea which he implemented in 1839 at Courthill Smithy in Keir Mill nearby when he adapted a hobby-horse for operation by treadles and levers driving the back wheel, hence inventing the bicycle. In 1842, to demonstrate the practicality of his invention he rode it to Glasgow and back (taking two days each way). Macmillan did little to exploit his invention - indeed it was only in 1892 that it was finally acknowledged that his was the first of various similar machines. The Castle exploits its connections with Kirkpatrick Macmillan. For a number of years, the Kirkpatrick Macmillan Cycle Rally was held in the grounds, there are a number of cycle trails, a cycle shop and hire business and a cycle museum. The banners promote the Dumfries and Galloway Bicycle Festival held in May.
