West end of the suspension bridge, Dumfries
The bridge was built in 1875 to give pedestrian access to the mills on the west bank of the Nith - for more information please see the Canmore website at https://canmore.org.uk/site/65510/dumfries-suspension-bridge. In the background is part of St Michael's Bridge.

Inscription, River Nith suspension bridge, Dumfries
The cast iron bears the motto A'LOREBURN (usually seen written "a lore burne").
In the history of Dumfries close to the town was the marsh through which ran the Loreburn whose name became the rallying cry of the town in times of attack – A Lore Burne (meaning 'to the muddy stream')
