Sign for the Cross Keys Hotel, Canonbie
Prior to the Reformation this was a very common inn sign, for it was the emblem of St Peter. When Henry VIII broke with Rome a number of signs changed to the King's Head. Later the keys had a significance when watchmen kept guard throughout the night on behalf of the community.

The Canonbie Cairn
Canonbie lies within the area which was known as the Debateable Land, a tract of land which was under the jurisdiction of neither the Scots nor the English. The cairn commemorates the Queen's Golden Jubilee.
