Central Hotel, Annan
A V-plan hotel built 1898 with a fine semicircular Ionic portico and dressed up with Jacobean shaped gables and corner towers. It is possible that the architect (F. Carruthers) based the design of this hotel on Caerlaverock Castle.

Annan: the Central Hotel
A large building on the acute corner of St. John's Road (right) and Station Road, and one of the first buildings encountered by those arriving in Annan by rail - the station is just behind us. The building appears to have been unused, unloved and forlorn for a few years at least, although it has (poor) TripAdvisor reviews as recently as April 2012.

Rowanbank Guest House
One of the pleasant sandstone villas which were built on both sides of St Johns Road between the 1860s and 1880s http://www.annan.org.uk/historic_walk/annan_historic_walk4.pdf . This one is distinguished by a pair of mythical creatures on the roof - see Image .

Wyvern roof finial
One of two on the roof of Image . The wyvern is a winged beast with a single pair of legs, whereas the dragon has two. Decorative terracotta creatures, including wyverns and dragons, were available from Victorian builders' merchants - several examples from Leicestershire can be seen here http://www.le.ac.uk/emoha/leicester/wyverns.html .

Nissan Leaf recharging
The Nissan Leaf car is not a very frequently seen sight on British roads. The all-electric car produces no tailpipe pollution or greenhouse gas emissions at the point of operation (though the electricity generated to recharge its batteries has to be produced somehow...) Leafs are more likely to be seen plugged into their chargers than on the open road, as they can take some eight hours to fully recharge, and then only have a range of some 100 miles. Decals on the car pictured show it to be operated by Dumfries and Galloway Council, and is part-funded by Transport Scotland. The car is standing in the car park of Annan swimming pool. The building in the background is part of Annan Academy.
