This used to be the main road to England from Glasgow, until the bypass was built in the 1960s. That in turn was replaced around 1990 by the A74(M).

Between the roads
In the early 1990s the A74 was upgraded into the A74(M), a six lane motorway. Here at Beattock, land between the roads appears overgrown. In the background is one of the many conifer forests along the Southern Upland Way.
