Old Churchyard in Moffat
This old cemetery at the south end of the High Street has gravestones almost solely created from local red sandstone from the River Annan basin. It contains the ruins of the gable end of a Pre-Reformation church. In 1747 the original graveyard was covered over with 4' of soil to accommodate future burials. It contains several famed occupants including Francis Moffat the Clan Chief of the Moffats. The graves of two postmen, John Goodfellow and James McGeorge, who perished in the snow while attempting to deliver the mail on foot near the Devil's Beef Tub.
