Canal by Kegworth in Leicestershire
This 1820s canalised section of the River Soar navigation leads to Kegworth Lock (off to the right). The barrier protects boaters from becoming stuck on an overflow weir which allows surplus water to rejoin the original course of the River Soar, which itself has descended a wide weir.

Kegworth (New) Deep Lock in Nottinghamshire
Kegworth Deep Lock, No 56, is on the canalised "old cut" of the River Soar from the 1820s, so is south of the county boundary. A corresponding weir is to the east on the original river course. This wide lock provides a rise (or fall) of twelve feet (3·65m)*. It is a 1986(?) replacement for the adjacent 1820s lock, which has been filled in. In this image the lock has almost completed draining, so the tail gates behind the camera can be opened. * the old lock was listed as providing a rise/fall of 7ft 6in (2·3m). Alterations have been made as part of a major flood control scheme.
