This southerly facing photograph¹ is of the Pilsley-Tibshelf section of the Five Pits Trail as it approaches Tibshelf. In the foreground the trail is levelling off after a short but steep climb from Westwood Beck (behind the viewpoint). At the metal barrier ahead the trail is met from the left (easterly) by a Image The track leads to an area of allotments but the footpath goes on to connect with a point close to Image Some 50metres beyond the barrier the trail meets Church Lane where it crosses Image (the grassy area ahead) but which was once a cutting carrying the Great Central Railway. The church tower on the left belongs to St John the Baptist Church² and the adjacent houses are on High Street, Tibshelf (B6014). If you visit Derbyshire, or the Peak District for some cycling, and think that the Monsal Trail is getting a bit like the M1 (what with the tunnels opening) then give these trails a try. 15 minutes drive from Chesterfield, winding trails, a few inclines, but nothing too steep, and hardly a soul in sight. Very few pedestrians to run over!

A signpost on the Five Pits Trail. Tom Hulatt was a runner, born in Tibshelf. He ran in the race in which Roger Bannister was the first to do the mile in less than four minutes. Tom came third. There is a plaque at either end of the mile on which he trained.

Some 60 or so metres ahead the track has a junction with Image Behind the viewpoint the track is gated at a point where there is vehicular access to the house. Beyond the gate, via a stile, the public footpath continues to Rouse Street, Pilsley. Notice the dogs behind the railings. They provide a noisy ‘welcome’ for passers-by. This section of the former Great Central Railway to the north of Tibshelf has been named the Tom Hullat Mile. Tom came third in the same event that Roger Bannister achieved the first sub four minute mile. See supplemental.

It was taken some 60- or 70metres from the lanes junction with the Five Pits Trail (behind the viewpoint). Ahead a public footpath leads toward Derwent Drive and Harrison Lane and thence on to other locations in Tibshelf and Pilsley. To the left the track also carries a public footpath. The Image passes Westwood House where the track is gated before becoming a public footpath that continues across fields toward Rouse Street, Pilsley.
