Ripley Market and Town Hall
Fruit and veg are being sold from outside an articulated lorry drawn up in Ripley's Market Place. Ripley was granted the right to hold a weekly market and annual fair by Henry III in 1251. At the north end of the Market Place is the distinctive town hall which was designed by George Eyre and opened in 1881. For many years it was the meeting place of Ripley Urban District Council until that body was disbanded under the local government reorganisation of 1974. It is now the headquarters of Amber Valley District Council and meetings of Ripley Town Council are also held here.

Market Place
Looking north across the large car park in the centre of town. The impressive Town Hall was built in 1880 and it was extended in the 1990s to form the Amber Valley Borough Council headquarters. The building reflects Ripley's importance as a market town and a centre for mining and the ironwork industry.
