Church Street, Wirksworth, Derbys
Since June 1984, when Princess Margaret opened these Derbyshire Rural Community Council premises, this unimaginative, utilitarian building seems likely to have spoiled the view of the C19th former grammar school behind it from this end of Church Street, a cul-de-sac.

"One up, one down"? A small former dwelling or out-house/workshop close to the last house in this cul-de-sac. Pedestrian access is evident onto the circular path that surrounds St Mary's Church graveyard.

I took this photograph to show the unusual and attractive windows in a gable-end of the bungalow.

Gell's Bedehouses
Founded by Anthony Gell in 1584 and erected shortly afterwards. Restored in 1963 "through the generosity of the late Mr William Killer of Worksworth". Anthony Gell, who died in 1584, was a barrister at Inner Temple in London. He founded Wirksworth Grammar School as well as the almshouses and bought the manor of Carsington.

Church Street, Wirksworth, Derbys
A row of almshouses that were endowed by Anthony Gell, a wealthy local lead merchant, in 1584. Their front elevation and small gardens look out onto the circular path that encompasses St Mary's Church graveyard. The graveyard's boundary railings are just visible. Also visible is a small curved section of the boundary wall that surrounds the former grammar school that was funded by Gell in 1576.
