Bench mark on St Matthew's Church
This bench mark was established in 1851 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 252.7660 feet [77.0431 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Sheffield to Birmingham (Branch Levelling to Darley Church) levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 5. Bolt in front of Darley Church tower ; 2.18 ft. above surface" (p364). The left hand side of the mark is obscured by a modern extension.
