Derby - Sadler Gate
A modern-day view of this ancient thoroughfare that links Iron Gate and Bold Lane (Bold Lane lies ahead in the distance and the Cathedral on Iron Gate lies behind the photographer). It seems that the long-established Meynell family may have commissioned the construction of a timber framed and brick building in 1608 but that it may have been Ford & Weston (builders) who were responsible for the mock-Tudor effect c.1929. The pub/hotel is currently empty and showing signs of vandalism.

Derby - Sadler Gate
With Iron Gate in the distance (the street that is home to the Cathedral) this is a modern-day view of this long established thoroughfare between Iron Gate and Bold Lane (Bold Lane being behind the photographer). It seems that the long-established Meynell family may have commissioned the construction of this timber-framed and brick hotel in 1608 but that it may have been Ford & Weston (builders) who were responsible for the mock-Tudor effect c.1929. The pub/hotel is currently empty and showing signs of vandalism.

Derby - Sadler Gate
The main entrance to the defunct Old Bell Hotel on Sadler Gate as seen from directly opposite it. Perhaps if nothing more, this image reflects the narrowness of this medieval thoroughfare. It seems that the long-established Meynell family may have commissioned the construction of this timber-framed and brick hotel in 1608 but that it may have been the Ford & Weston building company that was responsible for the mock-Tudor effect (c.1929). The pub/hotel is currently empty and showing signs of vandalism. Bold Lane lies to the right and Iron Gate, host street to the Cathedral, to the left.

The Old Bell Hotel
The placard indicates that despite its age, the pub is offering modern entertainment. The doorway dates back to the original building period of the 17th century, although the rest of the structure is much altered. Listed Grade II.

Derby: a fine doorway on Sadler Gate
The Grade II* listing for 48 Sadler Gate describes a "doorway, leading to passage, on right-hand side, with heavy C17 stone surround having round-headed arch, pilasters, pulvinated frieze, cornice and segmental pediment with date 1675 in tympanum. Well restored 1974". Nearly fifty years after that restoration another one looks due. Spot the true verticals and horizontals in this broadside picture.

Derby: a wet morning in Sadler Gate
The country's highest-ever temperatures had been recorded three days before (37.8C in Derby), but this was the second successive rainy morning and the temperature was almost twenty degrees lower. On the left is “the Old Bell Hotel, a very restored timber-framed building with brick infillings; four gables at the top; rainwater heads 1717" (Nikolaus Pevsner).
