Derby - Bridge Street Area
Looking along St John's Terrace towards Bridge Street. This unadopted private road runs parallel with a tributary - Markeaton Brook - that flows into the River Derwent and most of the owners of these properties have created small decked areas at the side of the brook in order to be able to enjoy fresh air and relaxation when the weather permits. The Brook reaches the Derwent at two points, in Darley Park and at Basses Recreation Ground to become part of the River Trent catchment. On the opposite bank lies the church yard of St John the Evangelist, Bridge Street,

The Markeaton Brook runs through the centre of Derby. It used to cause very bad floods but is now mostly culverted which reduces the danger.

Bench mark on St John's Church
This bench mark was established in 1851 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 170.7290 feet [52.0382 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Sheffield to Birmingham levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 139(g). St. John's Church, Bridge-street. Bolt in West side of South tower ; 1.97 ft. above surface" (p359). The 1883 town plans show this mark which is on the south face of the north-west turret.
