New Street is a very short street connecting Canal Street to John Street. It has a few small businesses along its length.

The Alexandra Hotel
Standing alone this is more of a real ale pub than a hotel. It dates back to around 1890 but is a very up to date place in that it offers real ale deliveries to your home if you live in the city boundary.

The Alexandra Hotel
The Alexandra Hotel is an award winning pub with a wide variety of real ales, which also has an ever changing set of guest ales. The hotel part of the name comes from just 4 rooms which are available for guests. Whether there were more in the past I do not know.

Alexandra Hotel, Derby
Glimpsed from a train approaching Derby station. The pub is on Siddals Road, and was built about 1890 and is "named after the Danish princess who married the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) in 1863" http://www.alexandrahotelderby.co.uk/ . It escaped demolition in the 1980s. I suppose the barbed wire in the foreground is to prevent residents of Amber House getting onto the railway track rather than to stop railway commuters climbing into Amber House.

A September evening in Siddals Road
Looking towards the junction of Station Approach, Siddals Road and Railway Terrace from the corner of Canal Street. Red brick and the rendered gable end of The Alexandra public house are bright against a clear sky just after six o'clock on a sunny late-September day.

Derby: a Class 37 cab at The Alex
An unexpected sight in the car park of The Alexandra on Siddals Road. An earlier photograph, taken before it was painted green, appeared in a quiz in a recent edition of "Derbyshire Life", so I can reveal that its number was 37 411 (originally D6990, built by English Electric in 1965).
