Noranside Open Prison
Following a notorious case in which an inmate absconded from an open prison and raped a girl in 2008, the criteria for placing inmates in open prisons were tightened up. As a result, the requirement for two open prisons in Scotland was reduced to such a point that Noranside was closed in 2011.

Blocked gateway to Noranside Prison
All alternative ways into Noranside Prison have been blocked with boulders to prevent ramraids. No longer necessary, as the prison was closed in 2011.
