Lyon Street tenement
A terrace built in 1886-7 for the workers of the Dens Mills. According to the listed buildings record, Baxter Brothers, Dundee's biggest employers at the time, were the only textile company to build housing for their workers in the centre of the city. In 1871, this block housed 648 people in 30 two-room, 73 three-room and 1 four-roomed houses at a cost of £11,892. They were renovated in the early 1980s.

Arthurstone Terrace, old and new
The old tenemental property ends at the edge of the gridsquare at number 14. Beyond that the new development replaced the tenements which continued up the numbers. Nostalgic shot for me, having lived here many moons ago!

St. Patrick's Church, Arthurstone Terrace
An R.C. church built in 1897-8. Irish immigrants began to arrive in Dundee in 1825, seeking work in the city's textile factories. Over the next 30 years their numbers grew to about 14,000 out of a total population of 60,000 in the 1851 census. In 1848 the Irish-born in Dundee constituted 20 per cent of all burials.
