Fountain Square
These traditional sandstone cottages, built on three sides of a courtyard, are in the main street of Auchmithie. Note the doocot above the arch at the far side. An information board near the public car park suggested that 'Fountain Square' is one of several unofficial names applied to roads and houses in the village, but Historic Environment Scotland lists Nos 1 to 6 Fountain Square in its Canmore database. The whole square is Category C Listed. According to the citation the square dates from 1890. The brick structure in the centre may be a water tower, is probably of later date than the cottages, and does as little for the view as the parked cars. Edit: Compare with Image], taken 10 years later. The only changes are the make and colour of the cars, and the addition of a satellite dish, neither of which is an improvement to the view, though no doubt very convenient for the residents.

They looked friendly enough to me!
The notice on the gate is in French and reads 'lunatic dogs'. I don't know whether that is standard French for 'Beware of the Dog' or whether it is to be taken literally. Not that 'lunatic' and 'friendly' are mutually exclusive, of course.
