Shunting Gong, Arbroath Station
Protected from the weather under Keptie Street Bridge, this long disused, redundant gong is a rare survivor from a long vanished method of working. The gong, no longer completely intact, was operated from Arbroath South signal box and assisted the signalman in communicating with the shunter working in the goods yard, some distance away. The gong was operated by lever in the signal box connected to the gong by a wire, the pulley wheel for which is at the base of the post. Arbroath South Signalbox closed on 21 March 1971 and the gong will not have been used since then.
