William The Lion
A simple sandstone slab marks the burial place of William I, King of Scots, who reigned from 1165-1214 and who founded Arbroath Abbey as a memorial to his childhood friend, Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury.

Arbroath Abbey was founded in 1178 by King William the Lion for a group of Tironensian Benedictine monks from Kelso Abbey. It was consecrated in 1197.
