Arbroath Smokies now have a protected geographical status, awarded by the European Union. The Brothock Burn flows past Spink's and it gives its name to Arbroath (Aberbrothock).

Brothock Water and smoke house, Arbroath
The little square tower with slots below the roof is a smoke house for producing the renowned Arbroath smokies. There was a little smoke haze to show that it was working.

The Arbroath Smokie is the town's famous delicacy and there are several outlets around the harbour area. This one, on Ladybridge Street, is colourfully decorated for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The Brothock Burn, Arbroath
Arbroath is short for Aberbrothock the mouth of the Brothock Burn. This stream powered a cluster of snuff and meal mills, plash and spinning mills.
