Royal Arch Bar and wooden sign, High Street, Montrose, Angus
The photo shows the Royal Arch public house at 32 High Street, Montrose as seen from the opposite side of the street. Above the Royal Arch sign, there is a wooden plaque which celebrates over 300 years of friendship between Montrose and France. The wooden sign, or Masonic Tableau, which was made in France, was erected by French sea-captains. At that time, the building was a coffee house and it is likely that these Gallic sailors often spoke of shared interests including ships, France and Freemasonry. The wooden sign is listed by Historic Environment Scotland but when it was taken down for an assessment of its condition in 2016, it was found to be in very poor condition. During this close inspection, the words “AND READING ROOM” were discovered and this indicates the original function of at least one of the rooms. Since that time, the sign has been refurbished and refitted.
