Housing at the former Horton Kirby Paper Mill
Horton Kirby Paper Mill was built in the 1820s, with the majority of the buildings extended during the 1870s and 1880s. It closed as a working mill at the end of 2003. It had two chimneys. The taller of the two mill chimneys was constructed in 1881 indicating a major expansion at that time. It was extended by 70 feet to 225 feet in 1918 and has been a major feature of this part of the Darent Valley ever since. The whole complex has now been redeveloped as an attractive housing development with the River Darent running through it, as seen here. The larger of the two chimneys has been kept, but reduced back to its original height - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3137450

Former Horton Kirby paper mill and its chimney
Paper making ceased here in 1973. The chimney dates from 1881. The premises lay semi-derelict for a time but are now used for business, industrial and residential purposes.

The River Darent, Dover Road, South Darenth
Looking through the trees to Horton Kirby Mill. The mill was at first a flour mill, built in 1820 by Henry Hall. Some years later the site was expanded and converted into a paper mill which took up a much larger area, and included a small tunnel through which the River Darent was diverted. Towards the end of the 19th century the mill further expanded, with a boiler house and large chimney built in 1881. In 1918 an extra 70 ft of circular stock was added to the chimney made of mostly red brick to ensure that emissions escaped from the valley. The chimney is now Grade 2 listed. The mill ceased operating in February 2003 and has since been redeveloped extensively for housing.
