Dartford, DA1 - St Edmund's Pleasance
One of the entrance/exit gates into St Edmund's Burial Ground (a.k.a. St Edmund's Pleasance) as seen from West View Road. The former cemetery is situated on a plateau overlooking East Hill (the A226) and it maintained by the Borough Council as an open space. This picture of an entrance to St Edmund's Burial Ground (a.k.a St Edmund's Pleasance) is taken from the corner of Great Queen's Street at its junction with East Hill (A226) visible on the left. This former cemetery is maintained as an open space by the Borough Council. Richard Trevithick (1771-1833), the Cornish mining engineer and inventor is buried here having died locally. He was lodging at the Bull Hotel in the High Street whilst contributing to some work on an engine being developed by John Hall, founder of J. & E. Hall Ltd. However, after he had been working in Dartford for about a year, he died of pneumonia in his hotel room. He was penniless, with no relatives or friends and as a result his colleagues at Hall's Works made a collection for his funeral expenses and acted as his bearers to this burial ground.

The 'Martyrs' Memorial' - Dartford, Kent
The monument is known locally as the Martyrs' Memorial (unveiled in 1888) and commemorates three of Kent's protestant martyrs burned at the stake in 1555. One of the martyrs, a local linen weaver named Christopher Waid, was publicly burned at Dartford Brent on 17th July 1555. This is the second Martyrs' Memorial to occupy the site. The first was erected in the 1850's but suffered extensive erosion.
