Original part of the river Weaver which was isolated in the eighteenth century. The river was straightened to allow salt barges through to the Mersey from Middlewich. These woods are supposed to be the only natural woods in Cheshire which, at the time of William the conk, was mainly moor and bog. His nephew planted woodland and forest so they could hunt venison.
