Time to go to the pub! Anderton, Cheshire
And we did. The Stanley Arms is on the other side of the Trent and Mersey Canal, off to the left. This image was obtained at 19:21 GMT, looking across the canal towards the village from the Anderton Nature Park.

A winding narrowboat near Anderton, Cheshire
The Trent and Mersey Canal. When a narrowboat is turning through 180° it is said to be winding (rhyme the wind with tinned). This may have something to do with the assistance the wind would provide (or not) in turning an unpowered boat before steam and diesel engines were invented. On narrow canals there are wider places called winding holes specifically provided for the purpose of turning round seventy foot long vessels. The winding hole opposite Anderton lift is much larger, because the boats using the Trent and Mersey Canal here, the Bridgewater Canal and the River Weaver were not restricted to seven feet in width, the maximum beam accommodated being 14ft 9in.
