ICI Wallerscote Works, steam engine
This soda ash works used to contain four large single cylinder engines by Walker Bros of Wigan. As built, three operated tail-rod compressors and one operated a tail-rod vacuum pump but one compressor was later converted to a vacuum pump. These were variously built in 1920 and 1921 and one was later preserved at Trencherfield Mill, Wigan but is now in store.
According to Colin Bowden this is a compressor and was serial No. 24545 of 1920. This does not survive.

Brunner Mond - Soda Ash plant
View from Winnington Lane. The plant is still in use but to a far lesser extent than previously. The greenery nearer the camera has taken the place of industrial buildings; the building from which Image was taken - this is the diametrically opposite view - no longer exists and has opened up the view to the silos.

Chemical works, Northwich
This I presume must be part of Brunner Mond's huge plant producing soda ash. Among many other uses, soda ash plays an important part in the making of glass.
Everything here looked a bit worn out and rusty and it crossed my mind that it may have been defunct.
