Brunner Mond - Soda Ash plant
View from Winnington Lane. The plant is still in use but to a far lesser extent than previously. The greenery nearer the camera has taken the place of industrial buildings; the building from which Image was taken - this is the diametrically opposite view - no longer exists and has opened up the view to the silos.

ICI Wallerscote Works, steam engine
This soda ash works used to contain four large single cylinder engines by Walker Bros of Wigan. As built, three operated tail-rod compressors and one operated a tail-rod vacuum pump but one compressor was later converted to a vacuum pump. These were variously built in 1920 and 1921 and one was later preserved at Trencherfield Mill, Wigan but is now in store. According to Colin Bowden this is a compressor and was serial No. 24545 of 1920. This does not survive.

Chemical works, Northwich
This I presume must be part of Brunner Mond's huge plant producing soda ash. Among many other uses, soda ash plays an important part in the making of glass. Everything here looked a bit worn out and rusty and it crossed my mind that it may have been defunct. Lo, it came to pass: Image
