ICI Wallerscote - steam vacuum pumping engine
This soda ash works used to contain four large single cylinder engines by Walker Bros of Wigan. As built, three operated tail-rod compressors and one operated a tail-rod vacuum pump but one compressor was later converted to a vacuum pump. These were variously built in 1920 and 1921 and one was later preserved at Trencherfield Mill, Wigan but is now in store.

This is the old course of the river which was replaced by the navigable channel a short distance to the north. Despite the greenness of the view, this is in the middle of an industrial site.

Brunner Mond - Soda Ash plant
View from Winnington Lane. The plant is still in use but to a far lesser extent than previously. The greenery nearer the camera has taken the place of industrial buildings; the building from which Image was taken - this is the diametrically opposite view - no longer exists and has opened up the view to the silos.
