Saltersford Tunnel, west end
An unusual near-parabolic arch, a feature of the early Trent & Mersey canal tunnels, not perpetuated. It seems a more circular, stepped-down reinforcement has been necessary some way in - best seen in the reflection.

Saltersford Tunnel west portal, Cheshire
The tunnel is east of Barnton and is one of three tunnels on the canal between Anderton and Preston Brook.
Saltersford Tunnel is 424 yards (388 metres) in length, and is narrow, so boats cannot pass each other in it. Additionally, the tunnel is crooked, the other end only being briefly visible initially, so great care has to be taken to make sure a boat has not already entered from the other end. There is no towpath in the tunnel; horses had to be unhitched and walked over the hill. In this image the approaching boat has river navigation lights as well as the central headlight.
